Brickwork repointed

POINTING

All brick, stone or block walls which are bonded together with mortar are subject to gradual erosion from wind, rain and frost. Once the exposed face of the mortar has receded behind the outer face of the wall, it become more vulnerable to erosion and at some point the mortar joints become so worn that water will penetrate and saturate the wall.

At some point the joints become so worn that water can penetrate and saturate the wall resulting in some obvious sign of deterioration such as disintegrating mortar, cracks in mortar joints, loose bricks or stones, damp walls, or damaged plasterwork. It’s not just the general look of the house exterior which suffers but left to deteriorate the wall could become unsafe.
Repointing is an essential aspect of building maintenance and can save the owner a great deal if scheduled as part of a strategic plan. Our repoints will last for years to come. Check out our Gallery of previously satisfied clients and jobs and you’ll see you’re in good hands with Alexander Pointing Ltd.

BRICK REPLACEMENT

“Spalling” is a term used to describe the condition of blown brick or stone front that has suffered due to frost and water penetration causing the front face to have either fully or partially blown off or worn away. Most bricks have clay as their main ingredient and are heat fired in a kiln to give the outer face a harder finish to repel the impact of wind, rain and frost. Sometimes the moisture in a brick can become frozen in winter and the expansion can literally blow the front protective layer off the brick. This then exposes the softer inner core of the brick which is highly porous and absorbs wind driven rain, which in turn can lead to penetrating damp and of course even greater degrees of spalling will occur.

A common error in trying to protect spalling brickwork or stonework is to either paint over the damaged area or infill with a cement mix but this can lead to greater moisture retention across the whole wall increasing the chances of further spalling in other brick faces! The best solution is to replace the damage bricks completely.

WATER REPELLENT COATINGS

Once you have sound walls a good way of maintaining the walls integrity is to apply a water repellent barrier. Alexander Pointing Ltd uses “Sovereign Double Strength” which is a deeply penetrating water-repellent for the protection of masonry. It prevents rain penetration into masonry materials by lining their pores rather than blocking them – allowing the masonry to continue to breathe naturally.

Unlike waterproof paints or other waterproof coatings Sovereign retains the natural finish of the masonry so it’s particularly suited for application to brickwork or stonework.

Sovereign can be used over freshly pointed walls to maintain water-repellency but just as important this deep penetrating Water Repellent improves the thermal resistance of the masonry by keeping it dry and reducing heat loss all of which help you with energy savings.

BRICK AND STONE CLEANING

The appearance of your building will be affected over time from pollutants such as traffic, extreme weather conditions, general dirt and grime as well as natural growths like moss and algae; this will obviously impair its appearance

Every building is unfortunately going to become dirty and damaged due to many natural factors. The brickwork of your building is constantly exposed to the natural elements, which causes dirt and grime to build up.

Moss and algae is another issue we have to deal with because it grows and spreads across the brickwork.

Inevitably all this buildup of moss, dirt, extreme weather erosion and pollutants can cause your once clean building to become dull.

Our experience in carrying out brick and stone cleaning means that we can do it safely and effectively.

CRACK STITCHING

Crack stitching is used when a building starts to get vertical cracking in the masonry.

Alexander Pointing Ltd’s crack stitching repair process involves rods that are grouted across cracks in walls to reconnect and strengthen masonry. The process employs stainless steel reinforced rods that are chemically bonded into bed joints to stitch cracks found within a property, redistributing tensile forces and stabilising a structure. The bed joints are cut out with specialist dust extraction cutting equipment and then the crack stitching bar is grouted in place preventing any future movement.

This quick, simple repair is non-disruptive so no additional stresses are put into the masonry yet it ensures an excellent bond within the substrate, allows the masonry to remain flexible enough to accommodate natural building movement provides a permanent and effective solution with minimal cost and little disruption.

ANTI-FLOOD

Sound brickwork and water repellent coatings offer excellent protection in reducing your flood risk, but all this work can be in vain if standard air bricks are installed. Anti-flood air bricks can prevent water entering your home by shutting down as soon as flood water is detected. The air bricks come in five different colours, can be retro fitted or used in new build construction, fully compliant with the Code for Sustainable Homes and suitable for use in listed buildings.
